Fringes, Edges, Roots and Corners is a series of photographs taken on daily trajectories in Tallinn and Viljandi (Estonia), Espoo (Finland) and Brussels (Belgium). The series captures personal spaces, domestic nature, within urban enironments that are created on the borders of private and public realms. Personal spaces that might extend into public, but not necessarily. Public spaces that are turned personal. Acts of taking space for oneself, but not at the expense of others. More or less shared realms that are not-yet-standardized, spaces that cannot be taken for granted, some of them already gone by now.
Part of the series in turn captures urban nature in public spaces that has survived despite human actions, in ever-present danger of getting in the way.
The exhibition You, River brought together three different, yet equally sensitive artistic visions. Through the lens of a camera, the photographers Peeter Tooming (1939–1997) and Endel Veliste (1930–2001) and the visual artist Hedi Jaansoo (b 1989) recorded points of intersection between human beings and nature. Their photographic series exemplify how the camera may amplify the distance from the surrounding environment, lend voices to stones, plants and water, and make the intrinsic interlacing of natural and artificial environments visible.
