A show in collaboration with Marje Üksine where both artists touch the lines of lived experiences, constantly casting them into new forms. In the practice of two artists from very different generations there is a simultanuous accumulation and dispersion of fragments – the constant recalling brings about highlighting the selected and crossing out the secondary. Observing and experiencing the surroundings, the chosen details are cut out from their original whole and bound into new bouquets with utmost specificity. Hedi binds her bouquets with such precision that recreating them is almost impossible, and yet so gently that they might vanish in an instant. Marje’s binding into brooches is permanent – the detail is put in place forever, locked in one set in one specific way.
My part of the show consists of a series of 10 photographs depicting withered, almost and completely dried baby pink spray carnations that my daughter received for her third birthday and I later sort-of-saved by cutting off their slimy and soon-to-be rotten stems. As per usual, they had been in a vase for too long and I didn’t dare to throw them out. The photographs show scratches and marks on walls and window sill, specks of candies, bits of tape, brim of a sweater and the carnations combined with golden wire, wooden sticks and shelf, rope and ribbon, and some old photographs.
The installation displays a metal garden arch, meant to support climbing flowers but turning out to be rather wobbly and more like needing some support itself. Some islands and lungs cut out from cork panels, ready-made miniature sculptures of candle wax, a branch gifted by Marje and a golden wire and earrings found from childhood home. And a dried carnation branch.
